Singing His Praise

From the beginning of the Old Testament to the book of Revelations at the end of the New Testament, God’s people have been commanded to worship him and have been Singing His Praise since creation. The song of Deborah recorded in Judges 5:3 is a declaration of praise: “Hear this, you kings! Listen you rulers! I will sing to the Lord, I will sing: I will make music to the Lord, the God of Israel.” This intent to honor the name of the Lord God Almighty has been held sacred by God’s people who continue to worship through heart-felt, spirit-filled singing.

King David, a prestigious ruler whom God proclaimed to be “a man after my own heart” spent hours of his days composing, playing and singing music to the Most High. Many of David’s recorded Psalms explain the reason that he and other men and women of God through the ages, have reason to be continuously Singing His Praise. In Psalms 59:16, David writes, “For I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuse in times of trouble.” Other verses throughout the Psalms give these reasons for Singing His Praise: “for all thy marvelous works (9:1), for turning “wailing into dancing” (30:11), for being “our maker” (95:6), and for “His holiness”(99:5). The list of God’s praise worthy attributes and kindnesses are endless, and His people should be in continuous joyful adoration.

Through Singing His Praise, churches receive spiritual renewal. As God’s people worship by Singing His Praise, the Lord responds by sending a spiritual enlightenment and revival. When Paul and Silas were imprisoned, their worshipful singing brought miraculous salvation. The power in Singing His Praise is still felt by the modern church. Whether Singing His Praise as a form of personal adoration or Singing His Praise through corporate worship in a choir or chorus, Christian people can grow closer to God through dwelling on His magnificence.

According to Isaiah 44:23, all of creation has reason to Sing His Praise: “Sing for Joy, O Heavens, for the Lord has done this; shout aloud, O Earth beneath. Burst into song, you mountains, you forest and all your trees, for the Lord has redeemed Jacob, he displays His glory in Israel.” Even at the end of time, the people of God will be privileged to Sing His Praise forever. Revelation 5:13 states that Paul heard “every creature in Heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: ‘To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, forever and ever!"

As long as the church recognizes that God is worthy of its songs of praise and remains in continual submission to him, it will prosper and grow. God has ordained music as an appropriate way to Sing His Praise, and obedient children should strive to please Him. Sincere musical praise will bring blessing raining from Heaven and will keep God’s church reaching forward as it awaits His return.

How to Forgive

Learn how to forgive from this Genesis Bible study

You never know how forgiving a person you really are until someone wrongs you. Can you relate? It seems that in my life something happens almost every week that begs for forgiveness. I thought I was making progress until I found myself repeating a story about someone who had wronged me years ago. I realized that I had not fully let it go.

Learning how to forgive is hard

The Bible teaches that God has totally forgiven us. He is willing to let the past be past. Believing this truth is the only way you will have the ability to forgive others and yourself. Learning to forgive is probably the most difficult lesson for a follower of Jesus to grasp.

Joseph and his brothers

The story of Joseph in Genesis 37-50 is a classic story about forgiveness. At age seventeen, Joseph's brothers sold him as a slave into Egypt. In Egypt Joseph was unfairly sent to prison for several years. But God protected Joseph and enabled him to interpret Pharaoh's dreams. Pharaoh was so impressed with Joseph that he made him Prime Minister of Egypt right on the spot.

Joseph learned how to forgive


After twenty-two years had passed, Joseph's brothers came to Egypt looking for grain. When the time was right, Joseph revealed himself to his brothers and forgave them. He held no grudges. He told them that what they intended for evil, God meant for good. In his excellent book Total Forgiveness, R. T. Kendall teaches us Here are several lessons from the life of Joseph and his brothers that you need to implement:

Keep quiet

To ensure privacy, Joseph had everyone leave the room (Genesis 45:1). Why? No one in Egypt needed to know what happened. It isn't necessary to tell people who aren't a part of either the problem or the solution. People often tell negative things about others only to punish and get even with their offenders. When you've been wronged, you have to decide who to tell. Tell the people that can help with the problem or solution.

Put them at ease

Joseph could have made his brothers acknowledge his power. He could have reminded them of his dreams and their disbelief. But Joseph did not want them to be afraid of him (Genesis 45:3).

Allow them to save face

Saving face means preserving one's dignity. To ease their minds, Joseph gave an explanation for his suffering. It was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. . .so then it was not you that sent me here, but God. (Genesis 45:5-8).

Continue the commitment to forgive year after year After Jacob died Joseph reassured his brothers of his kindness (Genesis 50:19-21). The commitment to forgive is a choice that we will have to renew tomorrow, next week, next month and next year. Satan's favorite strategy is to get into our thought life and tempt us to be bitter. Love pursues a lifestyle of forgiveness.

God's Cure For Depression

Depression is without a doubt one of the most common problems in our time. Due to the fact depression is so common, it has been called the common cold of emotional diseases. According to Everett Worthington, “depression is a downward spiral begun by loss of control and made worse by lack of energy and negative thinking”. The dictionary defines depression as “a feeling of extreme hopelessness”. This emotion manifests itself in the seeming reactions of: All is lost, I want to quit, I can’t make it.

Unfortunately Christians, even great spiritual leaders, are not exempt from depression. The psalmist David experienced it: “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?” (Psalms 42:5). Moses cried out, “I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now.” (Numbers 11:14-15). Elijah, the great prophet, battled depression just one day after his great triumph on Mount Carmel when he challenged the prophets of Baal, and he saw God answer his prayer in a mighty way.

When we look at these biblical heroes we realize that depression is no respector of persons. Everyone gets depressed at times. The question thus becomes, what is God’s remedy to cure depression? Let us look at the remedy God provided Elijah for it is one we can all use.

Step 1. Realize that depression is not a sin but a symptom. The way we respond to depression may be sinful, but the emotion itself is not. Sin may lead to depression, but all depression does not come from sin. Depression is like a warning light on a vehicle. The way to turn off the warning light is not to smash it out, but to find the problem. When depression sets in, something deep inside is usually wrong.

Step 2. Restore your physical body. “Then he (Elijah) lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat’ “ (I Kings 19:5). God’s remedy involves rest, food, and relaxation. We must never forget the role our bodies play in our emotions. Some people consistently neglect themselves physically. You should get sufficient rest, eat a balanced diet, and exercise regularly.

Step 3. Relinquish your frustration to God. The Lord asked, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with a sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too’ “ (I Kings 19:9-10). Elijah blew off steam to God and poured out his inner feelings. God allowed Elijah to vent his frustrations without condemning or criticizing him. Regardless how bad our circumstances seem, we should never stop communicating with God. Share your heart. You don’t have to be eloquent or creative; just let God know how you feel. Relinquishing your frustration brings a cleansing of all that has been pushed down inside of you and created these negative emotions.

Step 4. Refresh your awareness of God’s presence. “The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord’ “(I Kings 19:11). Nothing will refresh you like coming into the presence of God and realizing he loves and cares for you regardless of how you feel. God never promised this life would be happy, but he did promise to go with us through all our pain. If you are depressed, spend time alone with your Bible and God. As you read, allow God to speak to you and love you. There is no greater antidepressant than communication and fellowship with God.

Step 5. Redirect your life. God gave Elijah a new assignment. “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram” (I Kings 19:15). The fastest way to defeat depression is to quit drowning in self-pity. Take your eyes off yourself and start looking at the needs of others. Find people who are less fortunate and invest your life in them. When you give yourself to others, God will give to you. Jesus said, “Whosoever loses his life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25).

Step 6. Renew a friendship. “So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat” (I Kings 19:19). Depressed people need true friends. Don’t battle depression alone. Find a friend who will provide support and encouragement; someone who will help you see circumstances as they are, not as you perceive them. Eugene Kennedy said, “The main business of friendship is to sustain and make bearable each other’s burdens.” Christ can lift you out of depression. He can help you. He can heal you. You don’t have to stumble through life depressed!

Is Divorce a Sin?

Churches proclaim divorce to be a sin with certain exceptions. These exceptions depend on which church you attend. Some believe divorce is a sin unless there is sexual infidelity, but what about abuse or neglect of a spouse? Most would say that sexual infidelity may warrant a divorce, but an abused spouse may be recommended a separation until the abuser gets help, and a neglected spouse may be recommended to try and save the marriage. There are a number of ways to save a marriage. But there are also many different factors in different situations; it is difficult to find God’s will based on one rule to stay married except for sexual infidelity. Even then, sexual infidelity does not automatically demand a divorce.

Further complications include how the divorced are treated by the church. If a spouse who was abused or neglected by his or her spouse had a relationship with a kind friend that turned sexual, one of the spouses would be free to divorce and marry again and even serve as a church leader, and the other may be judged and shunned by people in the church. Which do you think is which? While both sides contributed to the breaking of the covenant of marriage, the side that sexually erred is often blamed the most.

Divorce is a legal issue, and some treat the Bible as a legal document to justify or condemn divorce. The Bible moves from rules and regulations in the Old Testament toward behavior based on a growing personal relationship with God. Laws are an external demand. God wants more than external change. He wants internal change through a personal interactive relationship. Both the Old and New Testament are also clear about God’s intention for marriage. While the Old Testament permitted divorce, the New Testament made clear what the Old Testament also made clear: God meant marriage to last. The Bible underscores the need to save marriages. There is no doubt divorce has major negative consequences on a person and the family. There are a number of options to take before divorce is unavoidable. However, if one does not view the Bible as a legal document addressing every circumstance, the justification for divorce is not captured by rules alone. It is based on one’s relationship with God and other Biblical values that come into play.

So one’s view of divorce may rest on one’s view of the Bible. Is the Bible like a legal document that covers all situations? Or does the Bible present principles that need to be applied to individual situations? Either view can support the high value of saving the marriage and that divorce is only acceptable if a party crosses this line: sexual infidelity. But, does that position address every situation? Is the New Testament more restrictive than the Old in that divorce was permitted but now is not?

There is a line between the position that Biblical rules have no exceptions except what is stated, and the opposite position that rationalizes one’s decisions to the point that they are not based on Biblical principles nor a personal relationship with God. Each one must look to their own conscience and ask if they are seeking God in their decisions, and especially in this decision to divorce. This may be difficult to do without consultation. Most likely at the point of divorce there have been sins committed on both sides; each side has to take responsibility for their own by examining the impact of his or her behavior on the other, expressing sincere remorse, making a commitment to the marriage and making sustainable changes. However, one’s position on the issue of divorce that comes from a personal relationship with God and Biblical values like justice, mercy and grace is ultimately preferable than one that merely follows rules.

God is a God of redemption. God seeks to restore that which was lost, and make it better. “Plan A” is preferred, but God can create a “Plan B,” even after divorce. David, a man after God’s own heart, required a “Plan B” after he committed adultery with a woman who later became his wife. Their son was chosen to be heir to a throne over the son of his first wife. This lineage led to Jesus Himself. This Old Testament story is one of many underscoring the message of a God who takes the bad and turns it around for good for those who return to God after their sin. Consequences remain, but redemption has the last word. Is the New Testament meant to imprison people in unholy relationships, only to punish them indefinitely after a divorce? Does the Old Testament convey more grace under the Law than the New Testament where people are covered by God’s mercy and grace? The Pharisees in the New Testament followed the law but missed important values in applying the law. Instead, the more one builds a relationship with God based on personal and didactic knowledge of Him (as revealed through reliable sources) the more clarity on this personal decision. The decision has to be personal because very few want a marriage based merely on duty, and such a relationship is bound not to last. In contrast, while God does not control people, He also may be the one resource that enables one to save the marriage.

Temptation

We can learn a lot about Satan’s temptations by studying the temptation of Jesus. In order for Jesus to become our Savior, His character needed to be built up and established through the temptations to sin which He resisted and overcame. In the temptation of Jesus, Satan used three specific strategies to tempt Him.

Lust of the flesh. Jesus was led into the wilderness where He fasted forty days and nights. This time of fasting set the stage for His temptation. After fasting Satan came to Jesus and said, “if thou be the Son of God, command these stones to be made bread”. Satan knew that Jesus would be hungry after His many days of fasting and challenged Him to satisfy his hunger. The wilderness setting made this temptation very powerful. Lust is a desire to have something and the flesh is the physical part of us that is able to enjoy the pleasures which the flesh lusts after. We are able to receive pleasure through our physical senses. We can see, taste, touch, smell, and hear things that bring pleasure to our heart, mind and soul through our body. We can understand how powerful this temptation would be. After forty days of fasting anyone would be extremely hungry and it would be easy to lust after food that would satisfy our flesh.

Jesus knew that giving into fleshly lust would be sinful. Jesus answered Satan’s temptation by saying, “It is written man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”. In using the word man, Jesus was affirming His intentions to live on earth as a human, subject to the needs and hungers that pull us into sin. Even in a physically weakened condition, Jesus did not seek strength from His divine nature to resist Satan. Notice how Jesus defeated this temptation. It was by the intelligent use of God’s Word for Jesus said, “It is written”. Jesus is indicating that it is more important to feed on God’s Word to strengthen our soul’s spiritual condition, than to feed on things to strengthen our physical condition. We have the same tool for defeating temptations of fleshly lust today, God’s Word. Jesus naturally desired to satisfy His hunger and give in to the lust of the flesh, but to use His divine power for selfish needs would dishonor God. We have many natural desires of the flesh in which dishonor is brought to God when we seek to fulfill them.

Lust of the eyes. When Jesus refused Satan’s first temptation, immediately Satan takes a new approach. Since Satan could not persuade Jesus to dishonor God, he attempted to seduce Jesus into a presumptuous use of God’s power to further His mission as Redeemer. In this new approach, Satan took Jesus into the holy city and set Him on a pinnacle of the temple. The holy city reflects a place set apart for God. Placing Jesus in this position put Jesus as close to God as possible. Satan knows how to put people in position for failure. Satan this time says to Jesus, “if thou be the Son of God cast thyself down. For it is written, He shall give His angels charge concerning thee, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.” In this temptation it is Satan that uses the Word of God. Satan stands at Jesus’ side and says, “Look down there at that crowd of people, all expectant and waiting for the coming of their Messiah. Now is the time to proclaim yourself as the Messiah.” Satan says, “Trust God and leap. If you land safely from this height you will prove yourself the Messiah. So shall you escape the long sacrifice and the awful shame of the Cross.”

This temptation was to encourage Jesus to take an easier path to power instead of the self-denying path of the Cross. Satan is suggesting to Jesus that if He would cast Himself down and be miraculously delivered, thus dazzling the eyes of the crowd (the lust of the eyes) He will prove Himself the Son of God. Jesus’ answer to this second temptation also came from the Word of God. Jesus said, “it is written thou shall not tempt the Lord thy God.” The Gospel writer Luke saw this temptation as the greatest of the three. We all have times when we feel that God has deserted us. The issue here may be seen as putting God to the test. Is the Lord with us or not?

The Pride of Life. Satan had failed tempting Jesus twice but doesn’t give up. He is now making his third attempt. Satan takes Jesus into a high mountain and shows Him all the kingdoms of the world. Here again Satan sets the stage by putting Jesus and the world in position. Satan shows the condition of the world to Jesus. He shows Jesus all the misery and corruption. Satan shows Jesus that with his help Jesus can rule all and lead the world. Satan offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if He would fall down and worship him. This temptation is seen by Matthew as the greatest of the three. Satan was offering to deprive himself of what rightfully belonged to Jesus on the condition that Jesus accepted the authority of the world on Satan’s principles. Jesus knew what Satan was showing Him would eventually become His, but Satan was offering them now. Jesus could have fallen to Satan’s temptation and all His suffering, rejection, and pain of death could have been avoided. Satan was suggesting to Jesus to take pride in Himself and raise Himself to Satan’s position, ruler of the world. If Jesus would submit to the temptation He could then force men to do His will. Jesus’ mission was not to compel obedience but to change the hearts of men. Satan lured Jesus into sin by the pride of life. The pride of being the ruler of the world. Satan was tempting Jesus to gain the world by abandoning the Father to become Satan’s accomplice. Our own pride often tempts us to abandon our heavenly Father and His ways for a little glory in this world.

Jesus again used God’s Word and said to Satan, “For it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.” Jesus is telling Satan point blank that He cannot offer Him enough to turn from God and serve him. Jesus refused to submit to Satan’s challenges even though He would have to face further suffering. We all face future suffering. Jesus gave complete commitment to the will of God which was His path to the throne. There is no other way and there are no short cuts. Our commitment to God’s will leads us also to our heavenly rewards. We cannot get there by falling into the temptations and snares that Satan sets for us.

After the temptations, Satan leaves Jesus and the angels came. Satan had offered everything he could at the most vulnerable time. He carried out all three strategies. He works with us in the same way. When one trial fails, he tries again.

It is amazing how Jesus’ temptations illustrate our own. Jesus had to cope with His great hunger as he was tempted to His lust of the flesh. We too, are tempted to satisfy our lusts of the flesh; our hungers and appetites. Jesus had to cope with His desire to satisfy the lust of the eyes. As He was shown the people in the temple He struggled with what they would see if He cast Himself down from the pinnacle. We too, are tempted to do things that are pleasing to our sight and the things that make us look good in the sight of others. Jesus had to cope with His pride as He was tempted to receive the power to rule the world. For some of us, it is our pride that is sometimes the greatest of the three temptations. We refuse to follow God’s way for fear of failure. We submit to Satan’s challenges because they give us strength today.

There are four lessons to be learned from Jesus’ temptations.

1. Jesus was truly determined to be a servant. He did not stop being God, but freely set aside His rights as being God. In choosing to empty and humble Himself, Jesus displayed God’s pathway to dominion. Many of us try to control things of this world by manipulating and using any force available to us.

2. Jesus’ full identification with us in our humanity offers hope. If Jesus had not overcome the tempter in His nature as God, we could not expect to overcome temptation.

3. Jesus’ responses to the tempter spotlights resources we can draw from to overcome temptation. In each case, Jesus used the Word of God and chose His principle to live by.

4. Jesus is portrayed as a person in full control of Himself. He demonstrated the authority of one who has gained power to humble Himself; power to submit to God; power to give up our rights; and power to obey.

Jesus established His character through the temptation by resisting sin and overcoming Satan’s challenges. Christians should build their character in the same fashion. Temptation leaves it’s mark on us, whether we have victory as Jesus did, or fail defeated and yield to it’s enticements. The result of that mark which cuts deep into the soul, is our character; either good or bad.

The Heart

God works through the heart (Jeremiah 31:33). It is out of the heart that we connect with God (Romans 10:10). We are told not to lose heart (Galatians 6:9). What does the heart represent in the Bible?  The definition of the heart in the Bible includes the conjunction of emotion, knowledge and the will. Each of these parts has an effect on the other parts; each part cannot be separated from the other parts.

In the story of the prodigal son, the father’s love for his wayward son was one of emotion, and not just from reasoning or just his commitment to his son. The father did not respond to his son just because it was the right thing to do, or because he was forcing his will to comply. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him (Luke 15:20).” It was the combination of all three parts – emotion, knowledge, and the will, that serves as a model for the love of God for us, and as a model for the love we are to have for others.

In contrast, in the description of a religious sect, Jesus describes their knowledge and their commitment, but questions their motivation. He compares them to white-washed tombs, beautiful on the outside but dead on the inside. He compares them with a dirty cup, again presentable on the outside, but the inside is corrupt (Matthew 23:25-27). Here again, rationality and dedication are insufficient if not corresponding to honest emotions. Paul also points to the knowledge of God alone being insufficient (Romans 1:21).

What if our desire, knowledge or will is lacking? God builds desire in us (Philippians 2:13), and for that we have to turn to Him.

Truth: First Priority of a Disciple Maker


Disciple making is spreading the DNA of Jesus. The DNA of Jesus is truth, relationships and mission. Jesus embodied this genetic code and passed it onto his disciples.

Let’s begin with passing on Truth. Jesus called his disciples to be with him. He built the relationship before he began teaching them. Grace precedes truth. Once the relationship is formed, it’s time to introduce people to the truth of Scripture. Whether a seeker or a believer, non-Christian or Christian, the first priority is the steady intake of divine truth. God’s truth changes people. As a disciple maker, you simply ask, “Would you be willing to read and talk about the Bible with me?”

In the Parable of the Sower (Mark 4), Jesus taught his disciples that the “seed” was the word of God. The seed contained the DNA of truth that the disciples must take into their life to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus. Further, he reminded them that the “soil” was the human heart. Through this basic, organic illustration Jesus taught one simple lesson: Since there is nothing wrong with the seed (Word of God), the level of fruitfulness depends on the receptivity and condition of the human heart that receives it.

Disciple-making involves obeying the Scriptures. This means reading and discussing the truth of God’s Word (in context) with another person or small group. First, decide on a portion of Scripture (consecutive chapters) that the group will read. Between five and thirty chapters per week is a realistic expectation. When you meet together, simply begin with these two questions: “What did God tell you to do?” and “What are you going to do about it?”

Most men love to read the sports page but not the Bible. Many people view Bible reading as a chore. The only way to fall in love with the Word of God is to read the Word of God. I meet one-on-one with several men on a monthly basis. Our mutual commitment is to read a minimum of thirty to fifty chapters of Scripture per month.

What happens when a person reveals that he didn’t have time to finish his Scripture reading for that week or month? You have the opportunity to lovingly ask him to examine his priorities. In Mark 4, the seed that fell on the thorny ground was choked out by other interests and worries. If we’re too busy to read the Bible, we’re too busy. There is no other source of truth. Divine truth is the Word of God inspired by the Spirit of God.

Many believers regularly meet with a small group and merely listen to a lesson that someone else prepared. Usually very little life change takes place. Why? God’s Word grows and bears the most fruit when we choose to read it. Listening to another person’s “lesson” is like going to a gym and watching someone else work out. You may learn some techniques, but you will never lose weight or get in shape by merely watching others exercise.

There are no short cuts. The seed is the Word of God. Truth comes into our life to the degree that the Scriptures come into our heart. Jesus died for us but will not read for us.

HALLOWEEN: DON’T BE TRICKED…IT’S NO TREAT

History traces Halloween back to the ancient religion of the Celtics. The Celtic people were very conscious of the spiritual world and had their own ideas of how they could gain access to it - such as by helping their over 300 gods to defeat their enemies in battle, or by imitating the gods in showing cleverness and cunning. Their two main feasts were Beltane at the beginning of summer (May 1), and Samhain at the end of summer (Nov. 1). They believed Samhain was a time when the division between the two worlds became very thin, when hostile supernatural forces were active and ghosts and spirits were free to wander as they wished.

The Celtic priests who carried out the rituals in the open air were called Druids, members of pagan orders in Britain, Ireland and Gaul, who generally performed their rituals by offering sacrifices, usually of animals, but sometimes of humans, in order to placate the gods; ensuring that the sun would return after the winter; and frightening away evil spirits. To the Celtics, the bonfire represented the sun and was used to aid the Druid in his fight with dark powers. The term bonfire comes from the words "bone fire," literally meaning the bones of sacrificed animals, sometimes human, were piled in a field with timber and set ablaze. All fires except those of the Druids were extinguished on Samhain and householders were levied a fee to relight their holy fire which burned at their altars. During the Festival of Samhain, fires would be lit which would burn all through the winter and sacrifices would be offered to the gods on the fires. This practice of burning humans was stopped around 1600, and an effigy was sometimes burned instead.

Samhain was the supreme night of demonic jubilation. Spirits of the dead would rise out of their graves and wander the countryside, trying to return to the homes where they formerly lived. Frightened villagers tried to appease these wandering spirits by offering them gifts of fruit and nuts. This is the origin of our present day "trick-or-treat." They began the tradition of placing plates of the finest food and bits of treats that the household had to offer on their doorsteps, as gifts, to appease the hunger of the ghostly wanderers. If not placated, villagers feared that the spirits would kill their flocks or destroy their property. 

The problem was... if the souls of dead loved ones could return that night, so could anything else, human or not, nice or not-so-nice. The only thing the superstitious people knew to do to protect themselves on such an occasion was to masquerade as one of the demonic hoard, and hopefully blend in unnoticed among them. Wearing masks and other disguises and blackening the face with soot were originally ways of hiding oneself from the spirits of the dead who might be roaming around. This is the origin of Halloween masquerading as devils, imps, ogres, and other demonic creatures.

Trick or Treat has been thought to have come from a European custom called "souling". Beggars would go from village to village begging for "soul cakes" made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers could guarantee a soul's passage to heaven.  In many parts of Britain and Ireland this night used to be known as 'Mischief Night', which meant that people were free to go around the village playing pranks and getting up to any kind of mischief without fear of being punished. Many of the different customs were taken to the United States by Irish and Scottish immigrants in the nineteenth century, and they developed into 'trick or treat'.

When Christianity spread to parts of Europe, instead of trying to abolish these pagan customs, people tried to introduce ideas which reflected a more Christian world-view. Halloween has since become a confusing mixture of traditions and practices from pagan cultures and Christian tradition. The Romans observed the holiday of Feralia, intended to give rest and peace to the departed. Participants made sacrifices in honor of the dead, offered up prayers for them, and made oblations to them. The festival was celebrated on February 21, the end of the Roman year. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV introduced All Saints' Day to replace the pagan festival of the dead. It was observed on May 13. In 834, Gregory III moved All Saint's Day from May 13 to Nov. 1 and for Christians, this became an opportunity for remembering before God all the saints who had died and all the dead in the Christian community. Oct. 31 thus became All Hallows' Eve ('hallow' means 'saint'). Sadly, though, many of the customs survived and were blended in with Christianity.

Numerous folk customs connected with the pagan observances for the dead have survived to the present. The various activities traditional to Halloween are mostly associated with the idea of obtaining good fortune and foretelling the future. The idea behind ducking, dooking or bobbing for apples seems to have been that snatching a bite from the apple enables the person to grasp good fortune. Samhain is a time for getting rid of weakness, as pagans once slaughtered weak animals which were unlikely to survive the winter. A common ritual calls for writing down weaknesses on a piece of paper or parchment, and tossing it into the fire. There used to be a custom of placing a stone in the hot ashes of the bonfire. If in the morning a person found that the stone had been removed or had cracked, it was a sign of bad fortune. Nuts have been used for divination: whether they burned quietly or exploded indicated good or bad luck. Peeling an apple and throwing the peel over one's shoulder was supposed to reveal the initial of one's future spouse. One way of looking for omens of death was for people to visit churchyards, because the spirits of those who were going to die during the coming year were thought to walk around the churchyard during this night.

The Jack-o-lantern is the festival light for Halloween and is the ancient symbol of a damned soul. Originally the Irish would carve out turnips or beets as lanterns as representations of the souls of the dead or goblins freed from the dead. When the Irish emigrated to America they could not find many turnips to carve into Jack O'Lanterns but they did find an abundance of pumpkins. Pumpkins seemed to be a suitable substitute for the turnips and pumpkins have been an essential part of Halloween celebrations ever since. Pumpkins were cut with faces representing demons and was originally intended to frighten away evil spirits. It was said that if a demon or such were to encounter something as fiendish looking as themselves that they'd run away in terror, thus sparing the houses dwellers from the ravages of dark entities. They would have been carried around the village boundaries or left outside the home to burn through the night. Bats, owls and other nocturnal animals, also popular symbols of Halloween, were originally feared because people believed that these creatures could communicate with the spirits of the dead. Black cats has religious origins as well. During the Middle Ages it was believed that witches could turn themselves into black cats. Thus when such a cat was seen, it was considered to be a witch in disguise.

Witches and witchcraft are dominant themes of the holiday. Witches generally believe themselves to be followers of an ancient religion, which goes back far beyond Christianity, and which is properly called 'wicca'. Witches are really just one side of a modern revival of paganism - the following of pre-Christian nature religions, the attempt to return to worshipping ancient Norse, Greek or Celtic gods and goddesses. The apostle Paul said Witchcraft is one of the acts of the sinful nature and those who practice it will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:16-21; see also Revelation 22:15). "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so."[Deuteronomy 18:10-14]

Should Christians adopt such practices? "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." [Romans 12:2]

Can we borrow the pagan customs and superstitions of ancient peoples and "Christianize" them? "Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. [1 Thesalonians 5:21-22]

Who can deny that virtually all of the symbols of Halloween are evil? Witches, monsters, ogres, vampires, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, devils and demons all portray evil. "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." [Ephesians 5:11]

The sort of practices celebrated on Halloween are what defiled the ancient nations [see Leviticus 18:24-30]. The Israelites were warned against such practices when they entered the Promised Land, "When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations." [Deuteronomy 18:9]


Is Halloween just another innocent holiday that doesn't harm anyone? Is it really just childish fun? Should the church be compromised by accommodating itself to the culture? Vandalism and want on disregard for the property of others is common on Halloween night. Even normally well-behaved children are driven by unseen forces to destructive behavior. Police officials everywhere report a great increase in such activities on Halloween. Worse yet are the horrifying accounts of poisoned candy and fruits booby-trapped with razor blades and needles. Such threats are so real that many hospitals offer free X-rays of Halloween treats in order to prevent children from being harmed. Who but Satan could inspire such monstrous actions?

As an alternative to the celebration of evil and death, Christians should rather do what Christians are supposed to do every day and that is shine the light of Jesus Christ. We should emphasize the Christian influences and strive to make Hallow's Eve a celebration of the acts of God through his people the saints. We should make it a day when acts of charity instead of vandalism and hatred abound. A day that emphasizes the light of Christ instead of the darkness of evil. A day when people meditate on the acts of Godly people instead of ghosts and goblins.

When America and the world celebrates the Festival of Samhain and the powers of darkness by masquerading as evil creatures or decorating our homes, schools, businesses and churches with occult symbols, Satanic power is glorified. While you may have participated "all in fun," be assured, Halloween is serious business for Satanists and witches. Those who oppose Christ are known to organize on Halloween to observe satanic rituals, to cast spells, to oppose churches and families, to perform sacrilegious acts, and to even offer blood sacrifices to Satan.

As evil prevails, Americans have embraced an evil day of Satan, with the pranks of 'would be' hoodlums, combined with 'demon faces' on pumpkins, clothing of 'death' being worn, and calling it fun. When Christians participate in Halloween, it sends a message to children that witchcraft, demonism, Satanism, and the occult are something fun, entertaining and harmless. Many years ago, C.S. Lewis wrote that one of Satan's most deceptive tactics is to convince people that he doesn't exist. Apparently he has done a good job in his deception. Sadly, many people think of the devil as no more than a symbol of evil: like Santa Claus, he is just a fictional symbol. Many people today also do not think of witches as real people who practice magic, but simply as imaginary figures who represent the supernatural world and everything that is 'spooky.' Recognizing this pagan holiday gives the false impression that what is actually lethal is harmless. Some children develop a fascination with the supernatural which leads them later into more sinister occult practices. It's the spiritual equivalent of painting a loaded gun to look like a toy and giving it to child to play with. 

 It is the kind of celebration that encourages kids like the 16-year-old in Pearl, Mississippi who stabbed his mother to death in her sleep and then opened fire at his high school, killing two students and wounding seven. Authorities found this student along with at least six others involved in a small, avowedly satanic clique that calls itself "Kroth." 

How some people can defend this kind of activity as just another innocent holiday that doesn't harm anyone is beyond me."Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed." [John 3:19-20]

Central to Satan's goals is the widespread acceptance of the supernatural, including the occult, on the part of North Americans, accompanied by a great revival of spiritualism all over the world. Over the last 30 years, the occult has moved into the mainstream of America - in television, movies, magazines, business, and various aspects of daily life. Movies, books, magazines and encyclopedias of the supernatural have abounded. Turn on your TV and hear from the ever-present "Harry Potter", or see lead characters in TV shows meet their "spirit guide." Entire bookstores devoted to the occult have become common. Universities regularly offer courses on witchcraft and magic - usually the so-called "white" variety. Myriads of mystical Eastern religions, bizarre and often demonic, have invaded North America and found in most cases an amazing responsiveness.

Increasingly the curriculum in many public schools is becoming a primer in occultism. Impressions, a curriculum used in many school districts instructs teachers and students in how to cast spells. One teacher's manual reads, "Tell the children that a magician has cast a spell on some children. Have them work in pairs to write the magic spell the magician used. Have each pair write another spell to reverse the first spell. Have them chant their spells." About 16,000 school districts use the Pumsey the Dragon curriculum, by Jill Anderson. Many of the relaxation techniques used are identical to those used in hypnosis. Another curriculum called Duso the Dolphin employs relaxation techniques and sends hypnotized youngsters off on guided fantasies to a place called Aquatron.

Recently, a California skateboard manufacturer used a package enclosure similar in appearance to a gospel tract to encourage purchasers to sell their souls to the devil. The brochure titled, "Let's Make a Deal" has a smiley-faced devil who explains to Flame Boy what happened in heaven after he was banished: "First off, they set up a bunch of dumb rules, and then they imposed a really strict dress code. I'll wager that people must be quite bored up there, but hey, that's what they get for being good." He contrasts this with, "Flame Boy, even a dimwit like you can see that hell is by far the best place to retire. Just look at all the fun to be had." Children are asked to sign and return a contract, by which they give possession of their souls to the devil for eternity.

Satanism has become a phenomenon that crosses the city limit into the rural areas of our nation. It is reported there are some 6000 witches, and approximately 10 million people are involved in the occult. However, it is very difficult to establish how many actually participate. These individuals are involved in a wide variety of activities from simply casting spells to human sacrifice. The news wires carry story after story about young children being kidnapped, only to be found later as victims of some bizarre ritualistic crime.

As satanic involvement among our youth increases, we begin to see the primary goal of such activity. According to Scripture (2 Cor. 4:4; Rev. 12:9), Satan's goal is to deceive man by blinding him to the truth of the gospel and to receive worship for himself (Matt. 4:9; Isa. 14:12-14). It has become clear that the primary goal is to alter an individual's values and turn him against himself, his beliefs, family, God and society."Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." [1 Peter 5:8]

Young Satanists believe the strong will rule with Satan. Once an individual becomes involved, they often make a pact with Satan. They commit themselves to a future date when they will take their own lives by suicide. They believe if they submit themselves to Satan in death, they will come back in another life as a stronger being and rule with him forever. According to recent statistics, fourteen young people a day take their own lives.

What's wrong with Halloween? It does not have even one single redeeming virtue. It is custom born out of pagan superstition. It is a demon-inspired, devil-glorifying, occult festival. It is an evening holy unto evil, death, and divination. The Scriptures tells us to "Abstain from all appearance of evil." [1Thess. 5:22] Wake up Christian! This is the night of evil and those who love the Lord Jesus Christ should have nothing to do with it.

We are all accountable for our choices and decisions. Ignorance is no excuse. The choice is up to you. Have you been involved in this satanic holiday? Do you struggle with giving it up because "it's just fun" and an innocent opportunity for children to dress up and collect candy? You are responsible for the anointing on your children’s lives!  I’m asking you to be a “good steward” of that anointing, not their “good buddy.”

You Were Not Born Gay

I decided to go in another direction in writing this article, due to something I had heard recently which prompted me to speak on the hard things others are afraid of or reluctant to speak on, and with times moving at an accelerated pace I felt it’s something that must and need to be spoken on. With words brought to my remembrance it is written “My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge…….” HOSEA 4:6.  God is saying if you don’t get to heaven you won’t be able to blame anyone but yourself, for all you need is provided in His book. The overall consensus circulating today is that homosexuality is something one is born as, this is nothing but a LIE put out by your adversary the devil and to the end of this article I will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, this is nothing but a LIE.

I believe by starting where it all began will give us a solid foundation upon which to stand, and all other views will be nothing but sinking sand. So journey back to where it all became, as we look into the book of GENESIS, I draw your eyes to it is written “And God said let us make man in our image, after our likeness…….” GENESIS 1:26. I focus on the divinely noun (us) God is speaking to someone and we know this to be His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, How I arrived at this conclusion, the answer is found in John’s Gospel, it is written “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…….” JOHN 1:1 I researched and discovered one of the most important titles of Christ is Logos (“Word”) upon this revelation, I have to put forth a question, have I ever seen God or His only begotten Son? My answer would be most emphatically a No, but I know if I’m made in their likeness, I know I look as they do, and I can’t be a homosexual because this would make God a perversion, and we know this can’t be true; it is written “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect…….” MATTHEW 5:48. If God is perfect then His only begotten Son is perfect.  It is written “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature…….” COLOSSIANS 1:15.  Dear reader you have to honestly ask yourself who has the most to benefit from the perversion of God’s Word.  You may be asking why the god of this world would want to blind people’s minds. Before I answer this you must know who the god of this world is.  It is written “And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil who are taken captive by him at his will…….” 2 TIMOTHY 2:26.  Now that you know who, I’ll answer the why, he knows where he will end up, so why not take as many people with you as you can.  It is written “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:…….” MATTHEW 25:41.  

Now that we know one isn’t born a homosexual, and we know who has the most to gain by speaking this untruth, I’ll now show you what God says about what is actually an abomination, again into Scripture it is written “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,…….” I CORTHIANS 6:9.  Now if one was born a homosexual God would be unjust if He wouldn’t allow them to inherit the kingdom.  Now follow me on this point, would not God in His infinite wisdom had added an asterisk on effeminate, to account for this? So what does this tell us? It’s a LIE put out by the devil to deceive you. We have looked at who, why and now with your indulgence you will see why this is actually occurring.  The bible says “Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up into vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the women, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient…….” ROMANS 1:24-28. This is the consequence of turning truth into a lie, remember “destroyed for a lack of knowledge” after reading this I was astounded how one would not know that there is a day of vengeance for sin for God would have it so.

Now that the lie has been exposed, one has before themselves a most grievous situation, does one continue on the path that leads to eternal damnation, or does one get right with God? In essence it is written “Behold I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;…….” DEUTERONOMY 11:26. I personally feel you have lived with the curse long enough, so I present to you the start of God’s blessing for your life, it is written “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me…….” ACTS 26:18. The Lord’s opening the door and you must not let this moment slip through your grasp, it is written “While it is said, To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses…….” HEBREWS 3:16-17. The Lord loves you so much, you may not have ever heard how He feels towards you, you may have actually heard that He’s angry and wants nothing but to punish you, this couldn’t be further from the truth, it is written “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance…….” II PETER 3:9.  Now it’s time to get right with God, repent of your sins and come from under that condemnation it is written “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit…….” ROMANS 8:1.
